    The National Archives, Kew:

    Colonel R. W. Craddock, 21. november 1945:

"Q/M P. BJORNOY joined a secret base in SHETLAND as a fishing boat engineer on 15th September 1941 and since that time has taken part in fifty operations by fishing boat and Subchaser, including a special operation in October 1942 for his part in which he received the D.S.M..

In spite of the injuries which he received as a result of exposure on this operation he resumed sailings from SHETLAND as soon as he was fit and continued on operations in fishing boats.

When in the Autumn of 1943 the Base was re-equipped with Subchasers, BJORNOY, although only a fisherman fitted himself by keenness and hard work to take over S.C. VIGRA as chief Engineer, and has acted in that capacity on every one of the forty operations the ship has carried out in enemy waters.

He is an outstanding representative of the engine room crews who so successfully adapted themselves from an extreme simple mechanism with which they had been familiar from childhood to the operation of a small but complex warship, which they have been notably successful at keeping at sea in all weathers.

It is recommended that Q/M BJORNOY be awarded the King's Medal for Courage in the Cause of Freedom."
