"He left Norway on the "BUCCINUM" in the summer of 1939 from AALESUND to Falmouth en route for America. They were due to return to Hamburg but put into Falmouth because the war had then broken out. HODDVIK signed off in Falmouth and returned home to Norway via Newcastle. He then signed on ss [unintelligible] and went ashore in Bergen after a trip to GLOMFJORD.
From the shipowners, [unintelligible], he received a job to go to Hamburg and return to Norway with a prize ship "KROSNES". He journeyed to Hamburg via Kr. sund. S. and Denmark but on arrival found that the boat had been released. Whilst he was in Hamburg the Norwegian invasion took place and he was interned in the prison in Hamburg. He was there for six months and complained that it was a bad place and they had bad food.
He was then sent on board ss. "WILHELM BLUMEN", a Drammen boat lying i Hamburg. They were on board for one month until the affairs of the boat were in order and went from Hamburg to Gydinia where they loaded coal. The ship then went to Drammen with this cargo and HODDEVIK there left the ship and travelled home Via Bergen, arriving October 1940. From then until shortly before Christmas he was out of work and at home, then signed on ss "BJORNUNGEN" a boat belonging to the BJØRNSTAD company, Oslo. This vessel went from Maaløy to Aalesund and loaded herrings there and at Florø and proceeded to Hamburg to load salt for Aukra (Norway). The boat then went with barrack building materials from Trondheim to Hennesberget Mo In Rana and Narvik. She then loaded at Bodø and similar materials for Finneide Saltun.
On another trip they loaded pipes, etc., at Trondheim for Fauske Saltun. They also made a trip from Trondheim with building materials to Hennesberget. Here HODDEVIK was tired of this job and deserted the boat returning home with a coastal boat.
Enquiries were made for him but he received no further news of the Gestapo. He arrived home some time in April and has been there ever since, helping his father.
He was very glad of the opportunity to leave Maaløy."
