    "for å ha innlagt seg særlige fortjenester av Norges sak ved fremragende virksomhet under krigen idet han den 9. mai 1941 i flammehavet i Liverpool havn etter tyskernes bombing sammen med fem norske sjømenn, berget et alliert handelsskip som brennende var forlatt av sitt mannskap og oppgitt av de britiske havnemyndigheter."
