  Ringen dro til sjøs i 1926 med ds "Margit Skogland" (5700) fra Haugesund tilh. Th. Skogland.
  Han tok styrmannseksamen i 1931 og Skipsfører eksamen i 1936 i Haugesund.
  Var styrmann på ss "Sisto", ms "Equatore", ss "Notos", ss "Boreas" og ss "Skogheim". Ble i 1940 fører av
  ss. "Skogheim" (4580) Haugesund tilh. N. Røgenæs.
  Har senere ført ds "Ekenes" (7000), ms "Sandsgaard" (1100) og ds "Kongsborg" (10100) alle av Stavanger.
