Etter museumsskipet D/S HESTMANDEN`s besøk i Newcastle 3.6.2025 har vi fått flere opplysninger og bilder fra Karl Fredrik Jonhansens barnebearn Louise Brown:After he retired from the sea, he went to work as a rope splicer at a firm called Haggies on Willington Key in Nort Shields, Newcastle. He retired from here at the age of 60 due to ill health, he had a heart attack. At the time, he was living at Cragside in Heaton, Newcastle. Shortly after this, him and his wife Bertha moved to Dunera House on Osborn Road West Jesmond, as Karl could no longer manage their house and garden.
A story he told was when he was serving in WWII, in 1941, he got word to join a ship at North Shields. On route, the bus that he was on broke down, so Karl decided to walk the rest of the way. When he arrived at the quay side, it was to see his ship sailing out of the Tyne and he had missed it.
That ship was later torpedoed and every man on board lost their lives. If my Grandad had got on that ship, non of us would be here.
When Karl joined the merchant navy at the age of 15, he wanted to train to become a sea captain, however when the war started, he couldn't get back to Norway, so was unable to fulfill his desire. He only came back to Norway two more times in his lifetime. Once in his thirties , with his wife and the last time, a couple of years before he died.
