Service: Australian Army. Date of enlistment: 18th June 1941. Locality/Place of enlistment: Geraldton, WA.
Next of kin: Elsa Myhre. Date of discharge: 10th September 1943. Posting at discharge: 2/16 Battalion. WW2 Honours and Gallantry: Military Medal (and Australia Service Medal 1939-1945).In October 1942, Myhre [WX14367] was recommended for receiving the Military Medal. At the time, he served in the 21. Australian Infantry (Brigade), 7. Australian (Division), in the New Guinea Force (Corps).
Action for which commended (Army Form):"For conspicuous gallantry and bravery in the face of enemy action whilst succouring and saving his wounded comrades Pte. Myhre J.F. is recommended for an immediate award of the Military Medal.
This soldier who was acting as a Strecher bearer to "B"Coy during the whole of the time he was in action, revealed a fearless disregard of his own personal safety, both in attending to the wounded and in bringing them back to safety."His actions at Pine Lodge Ridge Village on 29th and 30th Aug were particularly meritorious. Here numerous casualties were inflicted on both "A"&"B"Coys. Despite the fact that men were being killed and wounded all around, he calmly continued attending to a wounded soldier in spite of the fact that his own rifle was shattered to smithereens during this particular action. After completing the bandaging of his patient, he calmly continued attending to the various casualties and on completion of the same brought his wounded mate back to safety. In his action alone he was responsible for saving at least six lives.
Throughout the subsequent actions he displayed the same fearless care for the wounded until he was forced to be evacuated through sickness and exhaustion.
